Yup, we definitely need more weekends -- and since all the
existing weekend slots are already taken up with existing weekends, that
means we need to put 'em someplace else. I propose raising Wednesday and
Thursday to Official Weekend Status. There was an article in yesterday's
newspaper quoting a study that said that U.S. workers are the most
over-worked and under-vacationed in the developed world (they didn't say
if any of this applies to Canadians); that we get fewer vacation days
than Europeans, and that less than 37% of U.S. workers had taken as much
as seven consecutive days off for vacation purposes last year. So having
extra weekend time would be a real benefit to us all, in terms of mental,
physical, and emotional health. Plus, the entertainment and hospitality
industries ought to really go for it: it was their lobbying that got so
many U.S. holidays moved to the nearest Monday. Yeah, more weekends
should be a good thing. Just *think* of all the events we could have;
not to mention all the autocrats we could burn out. No, wait, maybe
that's not such a great thing . . .
