The online OED has (under "sanguine"):

1637 _MILTON_ /Lycidas/ 106 Like to that sanguine flower inscrib'd with woe.

That's not quite in period, but it suggests that sanguine was used as a 
descriptive for flowers and possibly roses. Perhaps someone with better 
resources than I might turn something up.
