A gem stone is an acceptable charge. Hazel Leaf's library should have
a PicDic - A Pictorial Dictionary of SCA Heraldry. At least there was
one with the office once. If not currently, get the barony to buy one
- while somewhat out of date, it's still an exceptionally useful
resource when used with precedents to see what the current
registerability status of a charge might be.

And you know how to find precedents, so you can check for yourself.
http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/ and look down the left column for
the link. Check the indices appended to the end of most sets of
precedents for specific charge types and think up alternate names.

This is where the index to the Ordinary is valuable. Hit it and look
for alternate terms and you find the entry Gemstone leads to Jewelry.
Perusing the entries can show you the last time something was
registered, which is a clue to current registerability, particularly
when you pair that search with a look at the LoAR on which the item
was registered and look for comments. After all, what are Laurel
precedents but commentary lifted from the LoARs themselves?
