For purposes other than SCA I found myself investigating Japanese
names of late. Though I'm not certain the reference translates to
Chinese as well, I now think of a Japanese personal name as a 'bottom
name' and family name as 'top name'.

Mind you, though, for Hungarian (which also has the family name come
first), I've always considered the first part the 'byname' and the
second the 'personal name'. For me there's the personal and another
name and whatever the other name is, in my head it's a byname.
