In this case, the single pile on the field, the upper corners of the pile should terminate some distance in from the upper corners of the shield. To the best of my knowledge, there is no precedent defined minimum or maximum distance in from the corner, but the more non-pile stuff on the field the greater the distance in from the corners the termination should be (i.e. make the pile narrower under these circumstances). On a shield with a 4.5 inch top edge, I would personally say that the minimum should be 1/2 inch from each corner, and the maximum should be 1 inch from each corner.
The presence or absence of fimbriation should not affect distance significantly, but the fimbriation should never touch the corners in any respect.
The trident is a Tertiary and gets a CD under either X.4.j.i or .ii., depending on what else is going on. It is not a maintained charge, as there is nothing holding the trident, an effective prerequisite for maintained status. Note that under X.4.j, more stuff has to happen to the trident on a pile than to a trident on the field in order to get a CD.

Greetings,
I've been given some questions that I'd like to get some insight on as I
feel these are great questions to pose to the list for educational purposes
(my own included).
1) With regards to a Pile fimbrated, where exactly should the two upper
points of the pile terminate? And how does the fimbriation affect this?
(Meaning, should the fimbriation end at the corners? Or in some other
location).
2) If a trident was on said pile and since a pile is an ordinary, does it
'maintain' the trident and therefore carry no heraldic weight? Or can it in
and of itself be used as a CD?
