This name was probably introduced to Norman England through Eleanor of
Aquitaine . . . Norman influence introduced it to Ireland, where, among
others, it was borne by the daughter of the Earl of Kildare, wife of
Conn O/ Ne/ill, Early of Tyrone (d. 1497) and by a daughter of the Earl
of Desmond, wife of O Rourke (d. 1589). The normal English forms in use
in Ireland are <Eleanor> and <Eleanora>.

Ursula Georges.
