I've posted some pictures of my client's proposed device.

This is based on the sketch he originally gave me:

I believe that this depiction of a scroll may not pass. I'd appreciate
a second opinion on that.

Switching to a more conventional image of a scroll resulted in this version:

This would (I believe) be blazoned: Sable, an open scroll Or, overall a
katana fesswise reversed argent.
I would appreciate opinions as to whether this would have a problem
being identifiable if my client wants to keep the scroll on top.

Moving the sword in front of the scroll does make it more identifiable:

This would (I believe) be blazoned: Sable, a katana fesswise reversed
argent, overall an open scroll Or.

(An open scroll defaults to palewise so I've omitted that in the blazons.)

I'm going back to the conflict checks for the last version (scroll
primary charge):

Angharad Rhondda of Glamorgan:
Sable, a closed book palewise Or.
- There is one CD for adding the sword overall (X.4.c).
I still don't know if there is a CD between a closed book and a scroll.
They are grouped together in the Ordinary but I would think there would
be enough difference visually for it to be a type change (X.4.e).
I couldn't find a precedent on it.

Cerridwyn Eurgledde ferch Owain ap Bychan ap Gruffudd:
Sable, in chief an open book Or overall a sword proper.
- There would be a CD for change in position (X.4.g).
- There would be a CD for changing the sword from palewise (default) to
fesswise (X.4.h).
- I would think there would be a CD for between an open book and a
scroll (under X.4.h) but there's already the needed two.

An Tir, Kingdom of:
Sable, a scroll unrolled bendwise argent, overall a sword Or. for Lists
Office
- One CD for changing the tincture of the scroll (X.4.d)
- One CD for changing the tincture of the sword. (X.4.d)
- One CD for changing the scroll's posture. (X.4.h)
- One CD for changing sword posture. (X.4.h)

Am I missing anything?

Alicia
