Greetings all,
I would like your assistance and feedback on documenting the name "Duncan MacKinnon of Skye."
I have put together my best documentation for the "Duncan MacKinnon" part; please find it below. I'd like to know if you think this is sufficient for that part of the name. The client is actually very particular about wanting that particular spelling -- he doesn't care about time period of what we have to do to document it.
The "of Skye" was added because I discovered plain "Duncan MacKinnon" was already registered in 1996. I have no idea how to document that portion, so I'd like help with that part as well.
Duncan -
Black, The Surnames of Scotland, sub "Macwalrick": "Sir Duncan McOlrig or Makolick possessed the chaplainry of St. Ninians, in the parish of UrquharT, before 1556"
Black, The Surnames of Scotland, sub "Macniven": "Duncan M'Nicoll V'nevin was one of Campbell of Barbreck's followers in 1623."
Black, The Surnames of Scotland, sub "MacPatrick": Allester McPatrick Bwy . . . and Duncan McPhadrick were fined for reset of Clan Gregor, 1613."
MacKinnon -
Academy St. Gabriel Report #1374 -- <MacKinnon> is a late-period Scots spelling of the Gaelic name <mac Fhionnghuine> "son of Fionnghuine"
A late 15th century Lowland woman might have been called <Katring MacKinnon>
I was unable to backtrack and find the reference to "MacKinnon" that the Academy used.
of Skye - This addition was necessary to clear a conflict with an already-registered Duncan MacKinnon. I have no idea how to document the spelling of the placename.
Thanks for your help,
Esclarmonde
