I would think that a 'leather covered book proper' would be
acceptable. We have plenty of proof that books were bound in leather
in period. Note that from the Table appended to the Glossary that
William mentioned, leather proper is brown and brown is classified as
a color.
It might not harm your cause to document that books bound in leather
were bound in brown leather but I'd support a leather covered book
proper in submission.
