Of the books on the antir-heralds rec list, I would highly recommend 
Foster and the little Pastoureau.

You might also want to check out Dame Zenobia's article on medieval 
rolls of arms:

This list includes lots of gorgeous, expensive reproductions, but it is 
still worth looking at (and worth checking amazon.co.uk , etc. for the 
ones you really want).
